Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple conversations following England's defeat in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

However, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
