England and Wales Placed in the Same Group for RWC 2027 Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was conducted by sporting icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England and their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in an identical group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a major pool stage clash in Australia. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This draw echoes their famous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground played a part in the hosts' surprise group stage elimination.

Key Group Pairings

The Irish alongside the Scots have likewise been drawn in a group once again, replicating the situation from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, they secured a 36-14 victory, with Scotland failing to progress to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, who each impressed as surprise packages in France, round out that same group.

Notably, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from defending champions and world number one South Africa before the final, presuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Tournament Implications

Should the pools conclude in line with the current global standings, further leading contenders like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from the likes of England and the Irish until the final.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on that half of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Opener

Hosts Australia have been drawn together with their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

The Wallabies will open the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster fixture aimed at jump-start the event.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have drawn Italy, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Argentina will take on the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the tournament grows to twenty-four nations from the 20 who took part in France.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a round of 16 stage for the very first time in the competition's existence.

Although the victor of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts initially, they will have to face the second-placed team from Group B – most likely Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six group winners will play a third-placed side from the pool stages.
