Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
