No fewer than thirteen passengers perish and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.

The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public works. They were built at an rapid rate, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
