Trump's Progressive Alarm Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided view of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" policies represent an existential threat to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger facing Europe is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. During this period, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, about 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly American. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two between the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a service under a single set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are reasons for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to propose substantial change. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of sweeping changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses considerable strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and premier labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. But, without decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
